The graphics are more than up to the job of making such a complex game look and feel realistic, especially as there are no loading delays and the transition into and out of your spaceship is seamless. The audio is pretty good too, especially as rock bad-boy Henry Rollins is voicing the eponymous anti-hero. So if you want to try a shooter with a bit of a difference keep your eye out for Mace Griffin. --David Jenkins Controlling your ship is extremely easy and the whole space combat simulator aspect of the game is very well designed and doesn't seem at all like a tacked-on mini-game. Further innovation is evident in the nature of your missions--you're not just an assassin but have to act as everything from bodyguard to computer hacker as you pay the bills with collected bounties and at the same time try to find out who betrayed you at the beginning of the game and forced you to spend 10 years in the clink. Although at first sight it appears to be just another sci-fi first-person shooter, Mace Griffin soon reveals itself to have rather more ambition than that. Although it's mission based, the structure of the game is such that you can tackle things however you want, not just choosing between a stealthily or more gung-ho approach but opting to pop into your spaceship at any point for a bit of dogfighting or to access a different part of the level. Enter a world of treachery, revenge, really big guns and even bigger spaceships as you take on the role of Mace Griffin: Bounty Hunter in this decent new shoot-'em-up adventure.

Ground Control concentrated on pure, straightforward RTS action with no resource management, with the catch being the command vehicle has to survive. Here, there are 15 more levels of organised mayhem on three worlds, together with the regular extra multiplayer and skirmish maps. If you have Ground Control but haven't played in a while, go back to the training mode to get re-acquainted as it tends to assume you're an expert. There's little blood as the units are seen (and destroyed) from vehicle view. Dark Conspiracy's 400Mb HDD space requirements put a full install of original and add-on at nearly a gigabyte, but this thankfully doesn't detract from the quality of the software. --Kenneth Henry The Dark Conspiracy mission pack starts where the original left off, with the protagonist Major Sarah Parker stranded on planet Krig with an unknown future based on her fateful choices at the end of the original game.
The first mission is deceptively simple; but then from level two onwards it's a tooth-and-nail war of attrition with little respite. The lack of in-game save and limited resources make you treasure every unit even more so than in the original game, as new orders arrive mid-level; and friendly fire can cost you the mission if it happens often enough.
Then there's the mastery of the camera; if you can't match up the displays and follow the path of every unit, once again you'll suffer needless losses that stop your progress. "Stray Unit Syndrome" has crept in at times, which didn't affect the original; however It's another reason to pick the right formation to move a whole squad.

Shogun thrusts you into the unstable politics of 16th-century feudal Japan. You command thousands of loyal samurai and other troops against six other factions in massive battles that will determine the fate of Japan itself. You can learn the basics of the art of war by playing the included tutorial missions, hone and test your skills by loading historical battles, or enter the campaign mode and go for the ultimate goal: becoming Shogun. But weather and time are the least of your worries. Effectively managing your troops is the key to victory and also the toughest aspect of the game. There are dozens of formations to choose from and hundreds of tactical tricks to exploit. Keeping your archers, cavalry units and various types of foot-samurai all pointing the right way and effectively supporting one another is half the battle. The game interface and keyboard shortcuts make things easier, but Shogun's manual is just terrible. A simulation this fast-paced and complex deserves thorough and accurate documentation, but you'll have to buy the separate strategy guide to get any worthwhile information. Fortunately, those with a little patience and an interest in the game should be able to figure things out, and they'll be rewarded with one of the most realistic and fun real-time war games available. --T Byrl Baker Campaign play is divided into two portions--the strategic overview map where you manage your armies and provinces, and the tactical combat mode where battles are fought. The strategy portion isn't too deep. There aren't many buildings or unit types to build, and the diplomatic options are limited. It merely serves to provide a frame for the battle sequences, and that's where Shogun really shines. Battles are fought on beautiful 3-D landscapes, with forests to hide in, fortifications to storm, and rolling hills to climb. Weather effects like rain and snow aren't just there for looks--they have a dramatic impact on gameplay. Wet conditions will render the match-lit guns useless and also decrease the range of archers because their bowstrings get wet. Troops get bogged down by wet gear, and high winds push arrows aside. Even the seasons affect battles, as longer or shorter days in the summer and winter determine how long you have to defeat your foe (or how long you must fend off an assault).
