Advance Wars 2--a sequel to possibly the best game ever for the Game Boy Advance--is finally here; it's exactly the same as it was before, and for once that's a really good thing. A turn-based strategy game of the type that PC owners regularly use to send their children to sleep, Advance Wars 2 should by rights be just as dull; but a combination of slick presentation and an insistence on keeping the rules simple and the unit types and map sizes to a minimum means it's actually one of the most insanely addictive games since Tetris. Manipulating armies of tanks, battleships and air-force bombers has never been so much fun. As noted, there's nothing very different about this sequel except for a few new enemy-fixed gun emplacements and one new unit, the slightly dull neotank. Perhaps the most significant change is that the COs (the commanding officers who act as personification of either side in the battle) now have two levels of special ability, which ups the tactical considerations of the game a notch. The full-featured map designer is also maintained from the previous iteration, as is the facility for two players to compete against each other using the same console and cartridge, or for four to gang up using a Game Link cable. It is, in short, one of the best things ever. Read more Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising

Aftermath splits neatly into two distinct segments--the base organisation, planning and high-level overview where research projects must be decided upon and soldiers recruited and equipped. The second (and more engrossing portion) is the real-time combat sessions where a squad of up to seven player-controlled troops must search a variety of randomly generated geographic areas including deserts and built-up urban areas and wipe out any alien presence they find, capturing artefacts and technology for further research back at the lab. The bottom line is that you'll either love it or hate it--there's no middle ground here and those looking for something with more immediate feedback would do better plumping for Command and Conquer Generals. --Chris Russel The sheer depth and detail of Global Power is going to put many people off. The initial learning curve is quite steep and finding the information you need to make the right decision can be more than a little frustrating. Those who stick with it will get out what they put in and it's fascinating to watch the AI for the world nations set about its task with a vengeance--though it does have to be said it occasionally makes some very odd decisions. From the off it's important to get a sense of what this game is all about. Action fans should look elsewhere as this is an in-depth and very detailed game that eschews any kind of action in favour of tabulated data that can be modified and amended during the game's turn-based play. Be warned: it can be very slow going. But slow is not necessarily a bad thing here--without plenty of careful thought and planning, just keeping things ticking over can be a major task in its own right. The premise behind Global Power is a simple one: take any nation of the world and make it great. Armed with massive amounts of information from the CIA's (in)famous World Fact Book, budding premiers are ready to take their country to the height of economic success or plunge the world into a state of global warfare. Graphically there's nothing to write home about. The screen displays are functional with no real frills and there's little in the way of animation. Sound too is very disappointing, though a built-in music player allows you to fire up your own tunes while plotting to take over the world. Megalomaniacs rejoice, for Global Power is a political simulation which will tax your sense of cunning, your ability to out-think the world's major governments and your patience, if you're not careful.
