Unfortunately, aside from the Farseer's impassioned diatribes against the Eldar's enemies, the campaign is otherwise fairly straightforward, with few twists within the missions themselves and little cohesion between missions. The real incentive to keep playing is that your units gain experience as they fight, becoming noticeably more powerful as they do so. Most Eldar units are promoted to Exarch status once they become sufficiently experienced, turning the once-vulnerable warriors into seemingly invincible warlords. Rites of War proves to be fairly enjoyable if you can get past all its many rough edges, the game finally comes across as a missed opportunity to show off Warhammer 40,000 in all its glory. --Greg Kasavin Fans of the source material will no doubt appreciate the opportunity posed by Rites of War to take on the Imperium with the Eldar's alien weapons and will be further pleased to learn that they'll face the Tyranid as well, who haven't shown their ugly faces on the computer screen since Space Hulk. Strike Fighters is a multi-faceted flight-simulation game that features one of the most versatile combat aircraft of all time the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. The core of the game is traditional combat flight-simulation the player takes command of a thundering jet fighter and engages in aerial dogfight with enemy fighters while seeking and destroying ground targets. The game is set in the 1960s when aviation technology was still primitive, but advancing at a rapid pace. Some missiles and guided weapons are available later in the game, but true to history, they remain somewhat unreliable and inaccurate. Although the game makes some key improvements from the original, it has its fair share of problems. First off, it's totally linear. There's never a need to stray from the key objectives because there's nothing else to discover or achieve. The artificial intelligence, while greatly improved, has a tendency to jump the gun and attack enemies immediately, making stealth tactics difficult. Lastly the system requirements are misleading--even on a 1GHz machine with a GeForce3-based graphics card there's plenty of slowdown when the screen is filled with units. The civilizations are diverse, running the gamut from the Assyrians to the Persians to the Yamato, and each can be played from its Stone Age roots to the epoch of its greatest achievements. This is one of the few games in this genre that lets players choose either an aggressive path or a more peaceful defensive course of action, as it is possible to win many games by defending your border and building an expensive Wonder of the World. Overall, the game's graphics are very good, but special mention must be made of the animations. At last, horses move like horses, elephants move like elephants, and even the sight of a villager chopping wood looks realistic. Battles can get a little out of hand since the game lacks military formation controls, but they are a sight to behold nonetheless. Should you tire of the single-player challenges, Age of Empires is still very popular online. It isn't hard to join a multiplayer game at nearly any time of day. Other strategy games can give you control of armies, countries and even whole planets but there’s only one that actually puts in the role of a god. Black & White 2 is the latest game from Peter Molyneux, creator of classics such as Populous and Dungeon Keeper, and once again it casts you as a god who draws power from the faith of your subjects in order to manipulate the world around you using various natural phenomena like lightning strikes and earthquakes. The original Black & White was criticised for lacking structure and direction and for fumbling one of its key features: the gigantic AI-controlled monster that worked as your corporeal representative in the game world. For this sequel though all these problems have been solved and the creature is now far more intelligent and able to work a lot more autonomously, although you will still be able to train him in specific tasks – such as leading an army or constructing buildings. The rather aimless structure of the first game has also been drastically improved upon, with a proper campaign mode with specific objectives. One area the original game never disappointed inn was the graphics, but Black & White 2 looks even more amazing than before, with hundreds of humans on screen at a time and amazing attention to detail such as your creature’s fur becoming matted and damp in the rain.
