For the uninitiated, Sudden Strike II is a huge affair, allowing a maximum of 1000 units per game map. Infantry are displayed as tiny 3D foot soldiers, supported by fully rendered, fully authentic mini tanks, support vehicles and even fighter and bomber aircraft. The action takes place (obviously) in real-time with budding commanders given the opportunity to pause the action and issue commands at will--this facility is vital given the chaos that can ensue during a full-scale pitched battle. At a time when the Real-time Strategy game is no longer the darling of the games industry its nice to see that a real gem can pop up now and again. In the words of a much older troop-based game--wars never been so much fun.--Chris Russell Given the size of affairs its surprising that the slightly clunky interface works so well, but in practice its quick, easy to use and allows the player to concentrate on the important things in the game--like pounding the enemy to dust. Graphically, Sudden Strike is gorgeous. The animation of the foot soldiers really gives them life and the battlegrounds are nothing short of superb. This degree of detail does have its drawbacks, however, and its all too easy to lose troops in thick undergrowth and then have to search around to retrieve them before plugging on. This is a minor niggle however when weighed against the new-look AI which now makes proper defensive and offensive manoeuvres rather than just throwing troops directly into heavy fire. Perhaps the biggest strength of SS II is the addition of more structured missions. Different armies and scenarios have been weighted to offer varying levels of difficulty, so taking on the Russians with the German army is relatively easy whilst playing the Japanese against the US forces is a hellishly difficult task given differences in troop strengths. Sudden Strike II sees a return to the battlefields of World War II for PC Real-time Strategy fans with its elegant mix of mini-soldiers, complex tactics and lavish graphics.
