If you have Ground Control but haven't played in a while, go back to the training mode to get re-acquainted as it tends to assume you're an expert. There's little blood as the units are seen (and destroyed) from vehicle view. In terms of multiplayer you can either play the computer or play over a LAN and the manual says that the opposing AI is smarter and gives you a more realistic opponent, laying better transport networks and recognising where to invest and where to close unprofitable lines more efficiently than before. At the harder difficulty settings, the computer opponent is not that easy to beat. Basically if you like management sims you won't find a lot more challenging and entreating than this classic. For a first generation GameCube title, the graphics, sounds, and music are fantastic and show an awesome amount of detail. Though it's no Pokémon, this game should an appeal to wide-eyed younger gamers as well as seasoned veterans. The controls are intuitive and feel perfect for the standard GameCube controller; however, learning to position the camera can be a tad frustrating during some of the more tense moments, as it has only a few magnification levels and needs constant adjustment. Learning when and how to make the best use of your Pikmin's skills and traits is the essence of the game. You can control up to 100 Pikmin at a time while figuring out which are best suited for a particular task. Some are better fighters, while others can survive in water or handle explosive bomb rocks. However, even the best Pikmin herder will have to sacrifice a few of the plant-headed beasts for the greater good. It's this constant need to refine and create strategies to minimise losses that makes Pikmin challenging and always fun. The biggest obstacle you face is time; you have only 30 days (each day is about 15 minutes in real time) in which to find the necessary parts. While this keeps the pace of the game up, some may find such limits to be somewhat frustrating, as it means there will be a lot of repetition and rethinking of strategy. It also means that diligent gamers may find Pikmin to be rather a short game. At the end of your gaming day, though, Pikmin is one of the best games the GameCube will have for quite some time. The method of controlling your troops is turn based but with a real twist. Once the initial set up phase is complete you direct you squads or individual units, using a very complete yet incredibly easy order menu. The camera enables you to focus in on one soldier or back up to gaze upon the whole battle. Click on a tank, choose your move and then click anywhere in the map you want the tank to go, even set a series of waypoints to direct the tank away from any potential points of ambush. Once you've done your ordering, click the go button and that's it--off your happy troops trot. 60 seconds of real time in which you have no control, then it's back to the order phase and so on. The AI is great, your troops when fired upon will react and not merrily wander towards machine guns nests. However if you've ordered your whole squad straight down a road without scouting ahead then that's your fault. That is the overwhelming feeling you get from Combat Mission, if you mess up then it's your fault not the AI. Graphically this does the job. Great 3-D terrain and unit graphics, good animations and battlefield sound effects all help immerse you in to the game. This is a real gem. --Lawrence S Hall.
