The ground battles may at first seem slightly more mundane but you get all the classic trilogy technology to use, including outdated (in terms of the Star Wars timeline) leftovers from Revenge of the Sith). Theres no boring resource management either though which lets you get on with the actual strategy rather than the book keeping. The space battles in the game are the most immediately impressive element with some stunning graphics and a hugely impressive sense of scale. Its much easier to control than similar titles such as Homeworld though and the developers previous experience with user friendly strategy games such as Command & Conquer is very evident. This preview is based on an incomplete version of the game; features or problems mentioned above may not appear in the finished game. LucasArts have been trying to make a decent Star Wars strategy game for years but at last, with Empire at War, it looks like theyve cracked it.

Control the fate of the galaxy in the all new real-time strategy game Star Wars: Empire at War. Set a few years before the events of Episode IV: A New Hope, the game will let players rewrite history, as well as experience the aftermath of Star Wars: Episode III -Revenge of the Sith, the creation of the Rebel Alliance and Darth Vader`s rise to power. Using an entirely new game engine created by the Las Vegas-based developer Petroglyph, the game will feature beautifully rendered land and space battles set on memorable planets such as Hoth, Tatooine and Dagobah as well as never-before-seen environments taken directly from the Star Wars films and expanded universe novels. In the game, players can choose to join either the Rebel Alliance or the Galactic Empire, building and setting up tactical forces that can be unleashed on the enemy in real-time 3D. All of the gameplay and action within Star Wars: Empire at War is persistent, meaning that strategic and tactical elements from previous events will have a permanent effect on the galaxy. As players build, manage and progress their space and ground-based units, troops and vehicles, memorable Star Wars hero characters will begin playing a role in key situations. In addition to the single player campaign mode, the game will include a two-player Empire vs. Rebellion mode and up to eight player online skirmish modes.
- Wage war on ground and in space - battle it out in space and then send down your remaining forces to invade the planet.
- All action is persistent - every decision affects the next battle and, ultimately, the fate of the galaxy. Play out your own personal version of Episode IV: A New Hope.
- Real-time strategy (RTS) 3D gameplay set in more than 40 ground and space locations including Yavin IV, Tatooine and Dagobah - each has its own specific advantage and/or resource.
Reviews By A Customer At last, i think they have cracked it, a Star Wars strategy game that looks decent. After the failures of Galatic Battle grounds kucas arts eventually put together a crack team of stategy developers (including those behind the C&C projects, from Westwood) and have ended up wit what looks like a good result. I will try to outline this game in the east words possible: You can choose between the Emipre (ATAT's and Star Destroyers) or the rebels (X-Wings) and battle it out in the galaxy. With heroes such as Darth Vader and Han Solo at your disposale you can easily turn the tide of the battle. Both teams have a tech tree each that is composed of 5 levels (Empire only for Level 5 - enables them to construct the Deat Star) in which the empire researchg the upgrades and the rebels steal the parts from the empire to upgrade a further level, enabling you to build better units and comand more heroes and population caps.Worried that you wll spend half the game collecting resources for these intergalatic space vehicles, WRONG. You gain credits by controlling planets which will be the foundation of your economy, builing mine facilities on the surface will increase your overall credit allownace from that planet. This allows you to puircahse all the necessary soldiers and vehicles.During battle you can command up to 20 space cruisers (not including fighters or bombers) to destroy the enemy fleet, once this is accomplised you prepare for ground assult. Once on the ground you gain your reinforcements from your ships which will dispatch the troops to the surface menaing the more ships you have in space the more troops your likely to have available (i think).Below are the minimum specs for the computer:100% DirectX 9.0c compatible computerIntel Pentium III 1.0 GHz or AMD Athlon 1.0 GHzWindows 2000, Windows XP256MB RAM32 MB graphics card100% DirectX 9.0c compatible sound cardInternet: 56kbps or faster connection (required for multiplayer only)For better PC's i think the option to increase the speed and graphics of gameplay is optional allowing for a wide variety of gaming experinece.Hope this review was helpful for you. Empire at War reminds me a little bit of Star Trek: Armada, as well as Star Craft, with elements of Master of Orion thrown in too. You control star systems and build ships, train troops, build mines and weapons etc, then you lead your fleets into battle against enemy fleets, and if you are successful in space, you can launch a ground assault.
Taking charge of space and land battles is optional- you can let the computer automatically decide the fate of the battle for you, though be warned, you will lose more engagements that way.
The detail is wonderful. You can see TIE fighters dogfight with X-Wings and watch as huge Star Destroyers pummel everything around them. Stormtroopers march with discipline and tanks and speeders blast each other to pieces as you try to control the map. You can even lead Darth Vader and Obi-wan Kenobi into a duel!
The game is fun, but what makes it greater is the fact that it's easily modded and Lucas Arts make it easy for people to mod it. This increases the scope of the game still further, to the point where you have Clonetroopers fighting Separatist droids in your own recreation of the Clone Wars!
It's a great game and I recommend it to any Star Wars fan.Reviews By C. Macconnell : Date 19 Feb 2006
For anyone who likes Star Wars, this game is for you. For anyone who likes the Command & Conquer type of game, this is for you. For anyone who likes both, you shouldn't even be reading this - you should have bought it already! What is so good about this game is the depth. There are basically three types of game in one.
Firstly, you have the land based battles. You build up your base, create your units, explore the terrain for credit aquiring facilities, and then proceed to wipe out your opponent, together with anyone else along the way!
Secondly, there are space battles. Same idea as the land battles but this has more of an emphasis on using your units, as your space station comes with units to protect it as you upgrade it.
Finally, you have a galactic control mode, where you oversee all the activities on your controlled planets. In this mode, you can choose whether to fight the land & space battles that occur from trying to win another planet, or have them auto-resolved.
As standard with this type of game, there are tech trees to follow, along with unit & building upgrades along the way.
It has all the classic units from the films & has all the key characters who can be used as heroes to boost your troops, & your chances of winning a battle.
The one bad issue I had was that because my DVD drive is a bit old (3 years to be precise...I know...ancient), I had some trouble starting the game, as the disc could not be authenticated and therefore the game wouldn't launch. I called the tech support line (very helpful and friendly, for a change!) and they said it was probably just out of date firmware on the DVD drive. My advice would be to check for any updates to yours before trying the game. It's normally a simple download that updates everything automatically, and just saves a lot of hassle!
This really is a great game, and I would strongly recommend it to anyone. If you've been thinking about it, just get it, as you'll most likely love it.
